I spent 2004-2006 serving as a teacher with the U.S. Peace Corps in southeastern Turkmenistan. One of my brightest students disappeared in the middle of the school year, and rumor had it that he'd left to join an extremist group in Afghanistan. Soon afterwards, I returned home from abroad and met up with an old friend I hadn't seen in years, only to learn that he was joining the U.S. army. This gave me the inspiration for my book, which (though fiction) attempts to examine the circumstances of two young men joining up with either side of the U.S. conflict in Central Asia.
All proceeds from the book will be donated to charity, split between the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, and a non-profit dedicated to providing scholarships to Central Asian students who would otherwise be unable to attend university.
